"Is the year 2012 the end of the world as we know it?"

Original Opinion by Vultren (85)

With the recent "2012" movie out, it brings up the long and controversial arguement regarding the end of the world.

Should we worry and prepare? Or is this a myth?

Just because the Mayans got tired of adding days onto the calendar doesn't mean the world is over.

Or, maybe, in their infinite wisdom, they realized their own civilization wouldn't survive that long, and saw no point it continuing further with the calendar.

Still, good excuse to buy more ammo.

Look at the example of Y2K. Tons of people thought that Nostradamus was right about the end of the world (though many, if not all, of his previous predictions had been wrong). Did the world end? Nope. Same thing happened with the Adventists (now the Seventh Day Adventists) when they predicted the end of the world three times in the mid 1800s. From these examples I think that we shouldn't trust any fear mongers trying to promote their books(why would they want the money if the world were ending soon and only THEY knew anyway). Personally I think the Earth will survive for about another few billion years until the Sun's expansion swallows us while it turns into a red giant. We might be wiped out by an asteroid, super volcano, or meteor between now and then, but not in 2012.

The Mayan calendar doesn't predict the end of time. The 2012 winter solstice is just the start of a new cycle in the calendar.

NASA also debunked any theory about a kamikaze asteroid or planet on a collision course.

There will be no planetary alignment that will cause pole-shift. The Earth and the Sun will align with the center of the Milky Way, but that happens every year.

There will be no massive solar flare, and if it did occur, like all other solar flares, our atmosphere would shield us from the effects.

For the endless doomsday predictions, there is literally no evidence to support the claims.

I agree with you guys, however many seriously do believe the end is near and will be 12/21/10.

We need to look at the facts, I mean the bird flu and swine flu was a big scare too (people were scared of these, never became anything big) yet the country lived in fear. Should there be a better system that makes it so we know the facts and truth, and not just what Hollywood or other media productions make a "big deal" for something we shouldn't worry about when sicknesses like cancer and aids kill people by the thousands daily.

About every twenty years or so, there is some sort of hysterics in regards to the world ending. We dealt with the year 2000 not too long ago. I imagine that 1900, 1950 and 1000 (etc) were not any different. We have gone from Global Cooling being a threat to kill us all to Global Warming to Climate Change. We have had multiple swine flues, bird flues, AIDS and everything in between. I don't feel that anyone can adequately predict when the world is going to end and I wouldn't rely on the Mayans or any other group's data. There has probably been some hysterics from some other ancient civilization that have felt that the world was going to end in every single year known to man. According to an episode of Penn and Teller's show that is on Showtime (Bullspit), it is nothing more or less than b.s. that the Mayans even think this. Nonetheless, I will be taking advantage of the fact that people are going to be fire-selling their cars and other property around 2011 because they believe that the world is coming to an end.

They had some crap show about 2012 on the Discovery channel last night,and-because of all the recent hoopla, I forced myself to watch it.

The commercials were the most informative part.

I'm not going to take the time to find the exact link but there are a few pages in the site on the subject.

I always say to myself that the Mayans ran out of ink or that they just simply forgot about the whole end of the world idea. They probably came to realize how silly it was.

I don't think it will end. There will be many changes however. Bad ones as good ones.

Though, it does bring some fear. Especially all those end of the world shows on T.V. I just change the channel, it freaks me out just to think about it.

Remember, there will always be those who think differently. Hope they are wrong though.
